adopt a pet?

Adopting a pet will make you feel better

Caring for a companion animal can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment as well as lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation in all age groups. Simply put, pets aren’t just good friends; they’re also good medicine and can improve a person’s well-being in many ways.

  • How do I adopt a pet?

If you are interested in meeting one of our adoptable dogs please submit an adoption application.

Interviews for our adoptable dogs are conducted by a volunteer adoption counselor by appointment after reviewing the application. Appointments are not made on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our focus is making the best match between our adoptable animals and the prospective adopters and not simply completing an adoption. If we feel the animal you are applying for is the best match for your family one of our adoption coordinators will contact you to set up a meeting.

Please do not be concerned if we don’t contact you. We are a volunteer-based organization and we are only able to call back the people we feel the animal would be a good match for.

Once you are contacted and have met the animal, one of our volunteer adoption counselors will interview you. All the adults in the household must be present for adoption interviews. Once you have interviewed an adoption counselor we will make a decision if the animal is the best match for your family. You may not be able to take the animal home the day of your interview, depending on if the animal has any other issues that need to be addressed prior to adoption.

  • Are there any adoption requirements?

Adopters must be at least 18 years-old and be prepared to provide identification.

-If you adopt a dog or cat, you must agree to have your pet spayed or neutered if it is not already altered. Your adoption counselor will make arrangements for spay or neuter surgery as part of the adoption process.

-You must agree to provide adequate exercise, food, water, shelter, vaccinations, medical care, grooming, identification, lifelong care and love for your new pet.

-You must adhere to state and local ordinances pertaining to animal care and control.

-Animals will not be adopted to research institutions, to anyone who sells animals to research institutions, or to persons with a history of animal abuse or neglect.

-Pet Assistance League of Northern California reserves the right to deny the adoption of any animal.

-All cats/kittens are required to go home in a carrier.

NOTE: There is a two-week “trial period” after an animal is adopted. If, for any reason, an animal must be returned to us during the first two weeks after the adoption, we will either fully refund the adoption fee, or help to find an animal that would be a better match for your family.

  • How can I meet your adoptable animals?

PAL is a foster-home based animal rescue organization, and does not have a shelter facility for you to visit.

By housing the animals in people’s homes, PAL is able to ascertain their individual personalities, needs and behaviors. This helps us to match the right companion animal with the right adoptive home.
